In a commonplace environment at an unexpected hour:
How do we perceive beauty?
We perceive beauty based on our interests and aesthetics. Our morals help us define what is beautiful as well. For example, some people may believe that cannibals are beautiful because of their creativity through how they eat someone, while someone may think that cannibals are horrible and disgusting people, due to the fact that they take away a human's right to life. It's mainly our morals that help us decide if we want to feel in awe of something. Humans as a community are always looking for change and progressing so when we do see something that we perceive as beautiful it can truly be a breakthrough. For example, if we are late for work and we're in a rush but we hear a bird singing and we see that it's very colorful, we may believe it's beautiful because it grabbed our attention, we value beautiful things.
Do we stop to appreciate it enough?
I'd say we don't stop to appreciate beauty enough because we move on very quickly. I think that we'd benefit from stopping and staring to not feel as much anxiety, we'd know that there are times that we can stop and wait, because we're not running out of time and it's okay to shift your priorities. We always encounter different scenarios in which we can appreciate the beauty of life and what the world has to offer but our mind's have created a survival mode where we think we must move on and keep pushing; I believe that human minds are powerful enough to go against our animal instincts and learn to step back and look at what's going on around you.
Can we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?
It truly depends on a person, we're not looking for it so it truly depends on what your mind is thinking of. Your head may be thinking about you being late for work, what they're going to ask you at your job interview, what grade you're going to get at school, if the walk home will be dangerous, or other stressful things. Stress puts us in fight or flight mode and it's all our brain thinks about. So when something is unexpected, we usually don't see the talent because we are preoccupied with the thoughts of life's challenges. SOme people are enlightened and go throughout their days with ease and do see talent unfold before them, even when they weren't searching for it. It makes life feel rewarding and you feel a sense of peace or even community with your surroundings.
If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?
We're missing a lot. The amount is endless. But it really matters what a person values as beautiful. They may believe that a baby slug is wonderful and they stop to look at it slugging by, or that even getting a raise is beautiful because their hard work paid off. Beauty is subjective and it's truly the feeling of beauty that matters. Someone may not have enjoyed the man's violin because they find other things beautiful, like rushing home and seeing their new born baby girl. Things in this life are special, but beauty is all around us and it's never ending. We just have to look around and see something to value and be happy about, that's beauty.
