4. Overall, how would you rate the non-photo graphics in this issue? What were the strong points and weak points?

They were good overall, some just needed a bit more color pop.

Sports current event

The New York Times has a limit on how many articles you can access each month. So please be cautious when picking your story, you will only get a couple of chances if you don't like the story you start with. I have an account with the Times, so if you get locked out, I might be able to log in for you. Ideally, you will find one quickly. If you get locked out, please let me know.

Step 1: Find a recent interesting sports article from the New York Times. (20 points) Provide a link to the article so I can read it.
As Kobe Bryant Memorial Nears, Shaquille O’Neal Says: ‘I’m Hurting’

Step 2:  What is the headline? (10 points)
As Kobe Bryant Memorial Nears, Shaquille O’Neal Says: ‘I’m Hurting’

Step 3: Summarize the main point of the article in one or two sentences. (20 points)
Co-workers of Kobe Bryant, a basketball player who recently passed away, are currently mourning his death and thinking of how strange it is how he passed extremely suddenly.

Step 4: List any sports jargon (technical words related to a specific sport). (10 points)
All-Stars in his backcourt

the Hall of Fame center-turned-Turner Sports analyst

preseason as a pro
pickup ball
20 seasons with the storied Lakers

current and retired luminaries from around the league

O’Neal, the Hall of Fame center-turned-Turner Sports analyst

former Nets and Philadelphia 76ers highflier

All-Star most valuable player award

Step 5: List any adjectives (descriptive words about players, games, etc.). If none, write N/A. (10 points)

gradually
frequent
unforgettable
tenuous

legendary
luminaries

Step 6: Identify the type of article you found and explain why it matches one of the formats below: (20 points)
Recap - an article that describes the outcome of a recent game/event.
News update - a news focused piece about a recently news worthy sports happening.

I think this is a news update, not necessarily about a sports event but a happening in the sports community. It might be perceived as a recap but I don't think it's deep enough to be a recap as it lacks details; it only tells one outcome.

Step 7: Provide at least one example of how your article handles one of the following: (10 points)
Wins, losses season records
Game scores
Rankings- Tells you achievements of players
Names of players involved- Uses first and last names until mentioned again and then use last names.

Sports exploration activity

Part 1: Researching your sport

1. Choose a sport to research: (Football, Basketball, Baseball, Volleyball, Soccer, Golf, Tennis, etc.)
 Basketball

2. Identify your favorite team or athlete for your sport. Search the Internet and find a picture of mascot or photo of the athlete. Save the image to your student folder. Make a new folder called “Sports Exploration” in your student folder to save all of your files for this project. (10 points)

Top teams right now:
1. Milwaukee Bucks

Base your rankings from an official ranking for your sport (like Hollinger Power Rankings). Not your opinion. (20 points)
Where I got the rankings

Provide a summary of one team or athlete’s season performance. The summary should include the following:
Milwaukee Bucks
1. Wins, losses (5 points)
47 wins, 8 losses

Toronto Raptors

5. List three important rules for your sport. (10 points)
No traveling, ball must stay in bounds, cannot kick the ball.

6. List three examples of jargon for your sport and explain what they mean in words non-sport followers could understand. (10 points)
Airball: When a shot is made and the basketball completely misses the basketball hoop, the ball doesn't even touch the rim, a complete miss.
Bank shot: When a basket is made by bouncing the ball off the backboard and into the hoop.
Assist: When a player passes the ball to someone who scores after the pass.

7. What is an example of sports cliché associated with your sport or athlete? What is another way you could say it without using a cliché? (10 points)
"It's raining threes!" You could say that someone is making a lot of three pointers instead.

8. Name an athlete who is a legend for setting records for your sport? Provide a brief biography about the athlete: Kobe Bryant

• birth place
Philadelphia, PA, USA
• school attended
Lower Merion High School in Pennsylvania
• teams played for
Charlotte hornets drafted him but traded him to the Los Angeles Lakers
• records set
Bryant is still the youngest player ever to start an NBA game.

He scored the most points in a single game of the modern NBA era.

He has also scored more points, more free-throws, and made more turnovers than any other guard in history (he was dethroned by LeBron James for his point record this year).

He scored the most points ever in a single arena.

Post all of these answers on a blog titled: Sports exploration activity

Deadlines, Argh!

1. What is the origins of the word deadline? The origins are uncertain. It may have referred to lines that did not move.
2. What impact will missing today's deadline have on you? It will impact my grade, I'll miss 10 points for each day I don't turn my photos in. It also makes my teacher lose respect for me because it is not seen as responsible to miss a deadline.
3. Have you had issues meeting deadlines in other classes? If so, what consequences did you have for missing those deadlines? In the past I have, it'd make me lose points but it is uncommon for me to miss deadlines.  Today was a careless mistake because I forgot the camera thinking this class was tomorrow.
4. Do you find yourself missing deadlines on a regular basis? If so, what do you think causes you to miss deadlines? No, if I do it's because I forgot or because of a lack of motivation to work because of personal reasons that may drain me of my energy.
5. What specifically kept you from meeting today's photo deadline? Forgetting the photos and class were today. I believed I had an extra day because I have Mr.Reeves' class every weekday and it gets confusing whether it's an a or b day.
6. What do you plan to do to complete this task as quickly as possible so you can earn as much credit as you can? Make sure I complete all the photos today and not forget the camera tomorrow. Make sure to get to school earlier to turn in my photos.

1. Which of those eight suggestions do you think might help you be more efficient? Making a to do list. I like lists and I forget to write deadlines when I'm distracted so when I hear information such as the photos are due Monday, I should remember to write it down on a list of what I have to do.
2. Which of the suggestions is the toughest for you to complete? Why? I think saying no because I like to spend time with my family to not lose sight of what I value in life. Sometimes my sister will ask me to watch a movie or go for a walk and I'll do that instead of work when I should.
3. Are you a morning or night person? I'm a night person.
3A. What are some of the problems you might run into because you are more productive at certain times of the day? When I should work, at school, I get distracted because that is not the peak of when I have energy but I'm trying to get my body accustomed to working earlier and sleeping earlier.
4. How can you create a dedicated study time for yourself? I can tell people I'm going to be in my room for a certain amount of time and to not bug me please. Maybe even lock my door and tell them that my work takes precedence at that time.
5. What are three direct things could you do to eliminate distractions? I could put my phone under my bed, lock my door, and put headphones on or earplugs because I get easily distracted with sound.

1. Are there any correlations to taking control of your homework and time management? Yes, you become more used to working in specified times once you've made a habit of them and won't dread them so much.
2. What is your ideal study setting and mood? A comfortable place sitting with my legs out and positioning my back against a wall rather than in a chair with lots of light. I also like a lot of quiet because I'll focus on the noises around me if I don't have that and lose track of what I'm doing.
3. What are your biggest distractions when it comes to studying? Voices, when I'm working especially in my school my biggest weakness are voices because my brain focuses on them and I can''t think clearly. It's really hard to get back to work or motivated if I've become distracted and it sparks anxiety in me.
4. What three things could you do to help with those distractions? I could listen to calm music, take breaks to drink water when I've become distracted, or do a little stretch and breathe.

Magazine Cover types

Image based covers have one or few people on the cover, usually smiling. This is the most common type of magazine cover pages. In image based magazines the photo has to match with the style of the publication. Illustration based magazines have drawn illustrations as their cover page, like The New Yorker. Publications that use Illustration based cover pages are usually independently published and don't rely on newsstands to sell their product. Type based magazine covers rely on type, either computer generated or handwritten, this is very rare but is becoming more popular. Type presents the words to grab a reader's attention. Concept based magazine covers can be a mix of all the other themes. They have to be instantly understandable and powerful. They are funny, witty, or impactful and are designed to pack a powerful punch, in order to get a reader to open the magazine.

Finally, what is the relationship between words and photos on magazine covers and why is this important?

Photos on a cover are what grab a reader's attention and its name should be recognizable to readers, so don't change the design. The words on a magazine say what a magazine is about so the cover page should be related. The words should add to the power of the picture.

My favorite cover

Inspiring magazine covers

Martin Schoeller photographed Orange Is the New Black actress Uzo Aduba for the June 2015 cover of Stylist. The close up of Aduba’s face – with eyes squeezed shut and grin gap-toothed and joyful – is magnetic and jubilant.

This is my favorite magazine cover because of the colors on it. Orange is a bright color and is one of my favorites. I also really like the fonts and I like the contrast between the swirls on "Stylist" and the spikiness of "Crazy talent". The white font on Aduba's face brings out her white teeth as well, which is a signature physical aspect she has; her smile makes me smile as well. I know Aduba is an actress in Orange is the New Black and by recognizing her I become interested in whatever the story might be. The lighting is good and makes Aduba's face recognizable and in focus.

Self portraits and portraits intro

I did this project before and I think one way I could make my portraits better is by taking a candid shot rather than posing my subject.

1. A self-portrait doesn't have to be of your face—the image of two hands holding a camera says a lot about the photographer who shot his own portrait.

2. Another element of randomness that you can introduce to your portraits is the way that you light them. There are almost unlimited possibilities when it comes to using light in portraits.

3. Frame Your Subject

Environmental portrait:
Image result for environmental portrait
Image result for environmental portrait
I chose these photos because I like the colors and the details. I feel like you can connect more with subjects in environmental portraits.

Photography self portrait:
Image result for self portrait photography
Image result for self portrait photography
I chose these photos because I like that you can see the cameras and because I think they capture essences of the subjects, even though there's no eye contact.

Casual portrait:

Related image
I chose these photos because I think they are of good quality. Casual portraits are more formal than environmental portraits but I think these still show you who the subjects are.

For my self portrait I'll be shooting myself in whatever mood I'm in that day.For portraits I'll likely shoot my sister doing something she enjoys, like watching TV. I'll use composition rules to make it look better and lighting that shows my subject, but I'll also try to have fun so that the photos are enjoyable to look like too.

Shutter Speed, ISO, and Aperture- What do they do?

Once you are done reading - I want you to use google and find me an example of a photo taken at aperture setting F2.8 and an example of a photo taken at F16 or higher. DO NOT USE the photos on the website I sent you to, find different ones. Post those photos on your blog and label them.

F2.8
f/2.8 aperture. Canon 5D Mark III, Canon EF 85/1.8, 1/160 s, f/2.8, ISO 160, focus 85 mm

F16

Then answer the following questions:

1. What part of the body should we closely relate aperture?
The iris of an eye, aka a pupil.

2. Finish this sentence - the smaller the Aperture the darker the photo(smaller opening)_, the higher the Aperture __the brighter the photo(large opening)______________.
3. In your own words tell me how aperture impacts Depth of Field?
Large apertures make a small depth of field, it causes a blurry background. Small apertures make a large depth of field because the amount of light captured makes it hard to distinguish between the foreground and background.

Fast shutter speed

Slow shutter speed

1. If you were assigned to shoot at Bulldogs and Hotdogs night, which was a few weeks ago, what shutter speeds do you think you would have to shoot at the following events that night I would like you to answer the question for the following two situations:

At the beginning while the sun was still up and the courtyard had reasonable good light

a.) a booth in the middle of the yard near the Tree- slow
b.) a food booth outside under one of the big red awnings- slow
c.) the Stars performance inside the gym- fast
d.) students dancing near the center of the courtyard- fast
e.) people streaming in from the front doors-fast
f.) the basketball booth where students are shooting basketballs at a hoop- fast

Towards the end when there is no sun and has gotten dark enough that you can't see from one end of the courtyard to the other.

a.) a booth in the middle of the yard near the Tree- slow

b.) a food booth outside under one of the big red awnings- slow

c.) the Stars performance inside the gym-fast

d.) students dancing near the center of the courtyard-slow

e.) people streaming in from the front doors- fast

f.) the basketball booth where students are shooting basketballs at a hoop-fast

2. List the three settings your camera has regarding setting shutter speed (these are found at #5 on the Shutter Speed website. Explain how each works - DO NOT COPY AND PASTE, use your own words.
It has auto which chooses shutter peed, aperture, and speed automatically. It has Shutter priority where you choose the shutter speed and the camera selects the aperture. There's finally the Manual mode where you choose both the shutter speed and aperture manually.

Once you are finished, please go to google and find me an example of a photo taken at ISO 200 and a photo taken at ISO 3200 or 6400. Post both on your blog and label them.
ISO 200

ISO 6400
Spencer-Cox-Stars-High-ISO

Then answer the following questions:

1. What are the advantages of shoot at a higher ISO at a sporting event like basketball or a night football game? You can make your photos brighter but use a fast shutter speed to freeze movement. It fights motion blur but makes pictures granier.

2. What suggestions did the author make about using a low ISO?
Shoot where there is light so you won't have to have a high ISO, promoting a high quality picture. Stick to low ISO

3. What suggestions did the author make about using a high ISO?
Try to use aperture or shutter speed first to try to brighten your photo. When using a high ISO try using a fast shutter speed if you are stopping motion.

Random notes:
f/22 small
f/2.8 large
Small numbers represent large, whereas large numbers represent small apertures.

Photo manipulation and ethics

A. What are some of the main points you read about in the website above regarding manipulating images?
- Being ethical when editing photos means you have to be professional and make slight altercations to a photo so that you are still portraying the truth. You should say that you altered the photo.

-There is a difference between capturing the truth and creating art with photos.

B. What is the philosophy of newspapers like the Washington Post and the New York times regarding image manipulation?

They have very strict regulations on photo editing, you can't change the colors of the original photos in photoshop and you must show the proof that you didn't. They want to capture and show the truth the best that you can. They'd like you to be very straightforward with an audience of what was captured with your camera.

C. What do you think are acceptable things you could do to an image and not cross the line unto an unethical manipulation?

I think some photo manipulation is okay, such as cropping the photo or manipulating the colors a bit in order to make the photo more vibrant. Sometimes our cameras don't capture a picture the way we see it and we want to focus on something we were looking at in real life. I think that that is ethical, if you change it to how you feel you really saw it. I think it'd be more acceptable if you also publish the fact that you are using altered photos.

D. Post the manipulation (this means get that image and post it on your blog) that you think was the most unethical, and explain why you think it was unethical. If you do not know what the word ethic or unethical means, look them up on the internet. It is very important you know what those two words mean. Please write at least 2-3 sentences explaining why you think it is so bad.

oprah121

I believe that this photo is the most unethical because there was no permission at all from either of the subjects to alter their photos. Oprah Winfrey is the cover of the magazine and they're deceiving the audience by putting her in a sparkly, fancy dress, with the headline "Oprah! The richest woman on TV?" The publisher is already putting an idea into reader's heads that Oprah dresses like this and she can because she's rich, this is unethical because the audience is already forming an opinion based on false images; There's no part of the magazine that says it's altered.

E. Post the manipulation that you consider the least unethical, and explain why you think it is not as bad as others. Please write at least 2-3 sentences explaining why you think this one is not so bad.
daquila1

I feel as though this is the least unethical because this is a photo meant for a family and not a publication. The family simply wanted a photo in which they'd all be together and although it's not the truth it can help them have a photo that captures the fact that they're a family. I don't believe it's doing anything harmful.

Welcome back 2020

This is one of my favorites because it demonstrates passion and action in children about an important topic, climate change. I think it's good that someone is voicing their opinion on a great issue and their are many voices.

I like this photo because of the colors and the happiness shown within it.

I liked this photo because it's the first photo of a black hole and it makes me thing about what lies beyond Earth.

1. Best song of 2019
Sunflower by Post Malone and Swae Lee
I chose this as my favorite song from 2019 because I found myself enjoying whenever it came on the radio. It's a song which was also in Spiderman- into the spider-verse and I enjoyed that movie. I felt that the movie brought more representation for youth because the main character was a person of color and I think it's important for stories to show different kinds of people, especially for children. I felt represented as well because of the Spanish in the movie. The movie and song are light-hearted which makes them easy to enjoy.

2. Best movie of 2019

This was my favorite movie of 2019 because I got to watch it in theatre's. I usually don't see movies in a cinema so it was a treat to be able to go with my family and I enjoyed the movie because I felt as though it was supposed to help the audience grow up as well.

3. Most important news of 2019

To me the most important news story of 2019 was the story of the El Paso shooting in Walmart which killed 22 people. It was important to me because I have family in El Paso and my cousins were about to go to that specific Walmart that day but they became too tired. The gunman drove 11 hours to kill Mexicans and it scares me that people are so hateful and violent today for ignorant reasons and it's scary. It makes it feel very real that racism exists because I'm not faced with much because I "look white" but when I'm with my mom or speaking Spanish I do get looks. It makes me scared I may be shot for being Mexican.

4. Most important person of 2019

To me the most important person in 2019 socially was Donald Trump. He caused a lot of national hatred and political unrest. People don't feel safe in our country having a leader that does not represent us, I'm including myself. Trump works to disrespect others and for corrupt reasons, I think it sucks but it's important to recognize. He is important, especially in 2019's history because he caused so many issues and I don't respect his actions.

5. Sport/ entertainment moment/person
The United States women's national soccer team won the 2019 World Cup.
